ÈâÈ⴫ý

Dr. Georges J. Kipouros was a professor of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering whose career was defined not only by research excellence, but by the students he mentored and inspired. Following his passing last July, his family established a bursary in his memory and to support fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student.

A Career Dedicated to Engineering

Dr. Kipouros was a prolific researcher and educator in materials science, metallurgy, and advanced manufacturing. He joined the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now ÈâÈ⴫ý) as an associate professor in 1989 and published more than 170 peer-reviewed papers over the course of his career. His research focused on the processing of aluminum and magnesium, rare earth metals, and molten salts, as well as powder metallurgy and corrosion in additive manufacturing.

Equally as important were the students he mentored. Throughout his career, Dr. Kipouros placed a strong emphasis on student development and experiential learning. He supervised more than 50 undergraduate researchers, 38 master’s students, and 19 PhD students, consistently viewing their success as his most meaningful legacy.

Leadership Impact

Dr. Kipouros also made significant contributions through academic leadership at ÈâÈ⴫ý. As Head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, he expanded the co-op program and strengthened ties with industry. He later served as Assistant Dean of Engineering, where he supported the development of administrative structures for space analysis and contributed to the growth of Sexton Campus. He also held senior leadership roles as Vice-Chair of Senate and Director of the Minerals Engineering Centre, and served on numerous faculty and university committees, including the TUNS/ÈâÈ⴫ý Amalgamation Coordinating Committee.

In 2013, Dr. Kipouros accepted a new challenge as Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, while continuing to maintain close ties with ÈâÈ⴫ý colleagues. Upon retirement he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the ÈâÈ⴫ý Department of Mechanical Engineering where he continued to contribute to research and supervise and support graduate students with unwavering dedication until his passing on July 24, 2025.

Building a Life in Engineering

Raised in Athens Greece, Dr. Kipouros was a born engineer. As a child, he often collected scraps metals, storing them under this bed until he had enough material to build a bicycle.

He attended the National Technical University of Athens, graduating first in his class. Following his studies, he completed his mandatory military service in the Hellenic Armed Forces, attaining the rank of second lieutenant while serving as acting head of the army’s bureau of ammunition studies.

In 1974, Dr. Kipouros emigrated to Canada, where he earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Toronto. It was there that he met his wife, Matina. After completing his doctorate, he pursued postdoctoral research at MIT before becoming a senior researcher at General Motors. During his career he also served as a visiting professor at institutions around the world, including the University of Patras, the University of Trondheim, Tohoku University, Kyoto University, and the University of Tokyo.

A Lasting Legacy

The Dr. Georges J. Kipouros Bursary has been established in his memory to support the next generation of engineers. As the one-year anniversary of his death approaches, his family welcomes friends and former colleagues to contribute to the fund to support his memory and the students who defined his work.
