In the lead-up to the celebration of International Women's Day (March 8), the ��⴫ý Feminist Legal Association (DFLA) and the ��⴫ý Health Law Students' Association (DHLSA) invite members of the Schulich Law community to a trauma-informed lawyering presentation from Cassandra Armsworthy, partner and family law lawyer at Patterson Law.

The session, which was previously presented to the Canadian Bar Association, will explore how trauma impacts client experiences, offer practical approaches to compassionate advocacy, and discuss vicarious trauma, including ways lawyers can reduce the emotional toll of difficult files.

Information Session: 2027 McKelvey Cup and Sopinka Cup Moot

Are you a law student interested in learning trial skills, like how to do a direct examination, cross examination, jury address, and make objections?

Schulich Law offers a two-credit course each fall, the Sopinka Moot (LAWS 2171), which teaches these skills to 16 students.

From the group of 16, four students are selected to take part in the McKelvey Cup trial moot against the other Atlantic Canada law schools in February. The best team from the McKelvey Cup will go on to compete in the Sopinka Moot in March.

Tryouts for admission to the class are open to 1L and 2L students.

The Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic with Minister Martin (cancelled)

In 2024, Nova Scotia declared intimate partner violence to be an epidemic in the province.

In the lead-up to the celebration of International Women's Day (March 8), the ��⴫ý Feminist Legal Association (DFLA) and the ��⴫ý Family Law Society (DFLS) invite members of the Schulich Law community to hear Nova Scotia MLA and Chair of the Provincial Table on Gender-Based Violence Minister Leah Martin talk about the work being done to address this issue.

Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Conference on Humanitarian Assistance at Sea

The John E. Read International Law Society (JERILS) at the Schulich School of Law is partnering with the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) team at the Canadian Red Cross to host this year’s IHL Conference on Humanitarian Assistance at Sea. This annual conference brings together experts from across government, armed forces, academia, and the humanitarian sector, to discuss the maritime dimensions of contemporary international humanitarian law.

This year, the focus will be on the provision of humanitarian assistance and protection at sea. As armed conflicts increasingly extend to maritime domains, humanitarian assistance at sea presents unique legal and operational challenges. Examining these challenges is essential to ensure lawful, effective, and safe humanitarian action in naval contexts.

The ��⴫ý Journal of Legal Studies invites members of the Schulich Law community to its 14th annual Think Tank event.

The Think Tank is designed to showcase law students’ academic work, giving them a chance to present publicly, and to get feedback on their papers from an academic panel that may help guide the direction of their research.

The student with the winning presentation receives a $300 cash prize and the opportunity to publish their research in the next volume of the journal; each runner-up receives $200.

This year's presenters will be announced in late March.
