Keep calm and practice on! 

Even during Dal's current labour disruption, the Fountain School ensembles and preparation for our 2025-2026 concert and opera performance season will continue with as little disruption to students as possible.

Your ensembles are led by faculty from various labour unions. During the current labour disruption, 肉肉传媒 Faculty Association (DFA) members are not able to work, but Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) can.

Pop ensemble, DalChorus, new music ensemble, guitar, and percussion ensemble are lead by faculty who can work with you, and will proceed as planned.

If the labour disruption continues into September, auditions for the wind ensemble and our orchestra will be rescheduled, when DFA faculty are back to work. 

DalOpera Production stream coaching sessions with DalOpera pianists will proceed as planned.

DalOpera Scene stream class will resume when the DFA labour disruption is resolved.

Auditions for Wind and Brass will be held on Wednesday Sept. 3^rd 4:30-9:00pm, in the Joseph Strug Concert Hall.  Fill out this  to sign up.

The 肉肉传媒 University Wind Ensemble draws its membership primarily from students in the Fountain School of Performing Arts.  It is open to the entire student body regardless of their major field of study, to students of other universities and colleges, and to musicians from the community, by audition.  

The FSPAWE performs music from the extensive array of standard and contemporary works for wind ensemble while focusing on creating innovative and multidisciplinary approaches to contemporary and classic wind music. Concerts strive to be unlike any traditional wind ensemble concert and include performance elements from not only the discipline of music, but also dance, theatre, and visual art. 

The Wind Ensemble rehearses Wednesdays 4:30 to 6:30 pm in Room 121 of the 肉肉传媒 Arts Centre, plus Friday sectionals from 4:30-5:30. The Wind Ensemble is directed by Jacob Caines. Auditions are held in September. For more details contact jacob.caines@gmail.com

The 肉肉传媒 Guitar Ensemble provides opportunities for guitar majors to refine their ensemble skills. As well as performing in the guitar orchestra, students work in smaller guitar ensembles (occasionally mixing electric and acoustic guitars) and work with other instruments. An extensive repertoire is covered from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

The ensemble meets weekly throughout the academic year and performs on campus and in the community.

The Guitar Ensemble is under the direction of Scott Macmillan.

Let鈥檚 Sing! Schedule has been sent directly to all Applied Voice Students.

In the event of a labour disruption, Let鈥檚 Sing! will be delayed until disruption resolved.

Through learning, rehearsing, and performing opera scenes and a full-length opera, Dal voice students fully immerse themselves in the highly disciplined and creative process of being a singing-actor.

The Opera ensemble affords you the opportunity to develop and apply your individual skills to a larger cohesive group. You'll help create a dynamic, semi-professional environment and foster broader transferable skills of collaboration, agency, and accountability.

Most importantly, the Fountain school offers a unique opportunity for voice students to collaborate with peer colleagues from the Stage Design and Technical Theatre, and Costume Studies programs.

Rehearsals

The Fall Term has 2 streams:
Scenes Stream & Production Stream

Fall Term Scenes Stream: Room 121 & Room 103
Fridays 330-5pm ( in the case of Labour disruption, Fall Term Scenes stream will be delayed until disruption resolved)

You will explore many aspects of opera within an assigned scene, complete with a final presentation in our last class of the Fall term.

Fall Term Production Stream:
Room 121, Room 103, Sir James Dunn Theatre (Oct 20-Nov 30)

Casting for the Fall Production happens in the Spring of the prior term for the following Fall Production.

Students may be scheduled Fridays 9:30-11:30 (Individual coachings based on Student Schedules) & 2:30-6:30 Room 121.

In the case of labour disruption, coachings with DalOpera pianists will proceed as planned.

In addition to Friday Rehearsals, students in the Fall Production will also be scheduled on evenings & Saturdays once Fall Opera is in production from October 20-Nov 30.

Winter Term, One Ensemble
Room 121

Students combine their knowledge from the Fall term to become one stream/ensemble in the Winter term for larger scale scene study with staging and props. 

You will have a final presentation in our Opera Scenes concert in the Spring.

The 肉肉传媒 Symphony Orchestra is the only university orchestra in the Atlantic provinces. Primarily a training orchestra, this student ensemble performs approximately three concerts per year with varied repertoire from the Baroque to Contemporary periods. It performs as a full symphonic ensemble and also takes the role of accompaniment for student concerto performances and choral concerts.  

The Orchestra rehearses weekly (Tuesdays, 7:00-10:00 p.m.) in Room 121 of the Dal Arts Centre.

Concerts take place on the 肉肉传媒 campus and other venues around Halifax. The orchestra is conducted by Leonardo Perez. For more information please contact Dr. Leonardo Perez.

Our percussion ensemble is conducted by Mark Morton.

With repertoire ranging from classical transcriptions  to contemporary music, from traditional pieces to repertoire with a more modern flavor, this ensemble explores a variety of musical disciplines. It offers students ensemble experience not otherwise available to the percussionist.

The 肉肉传媒 Percussion Ensemble has performed at official university functions, in concerts, and on tour.

New Music Ensemble (NME)

As a member of the New Music Ensemble at 肉肉传媒鈥檚 Fountain School of Performing Arts, you鈥檒l dive into the creative world of 21st-century music-making. 

You鈥檒l work closely with fellow performers and composers to bring new music to life 鈥� from contemporary repertoire to brand new student works, group compositions, and improvised pieces. Performance majors will compose and improvise; composition students will perform. Everyone collaborates, creates, and experiments.

This is a space where creativity, risk-taking, and curiosity are key. You鈥檒l develop skills in deep listening, ensemble collaboration, interpretation, improvisation, musicianship, and electronic music 鈥� equipping you for life as a 21st-century musician.

What you鈥檒l do in NME:

• Perform major works from the contemporary classical repertoire

• Create and perform new pieces, individually and collaboratively

• Improvise and develop your own musical language

• Learn by doing in a supportive, exploratory environment

• Present your work in public performances as part of the NME season

You鈥檒l be assessed on:

• Attendance and participation in rehearsals and workshops

• Preparation and contribution to group creative processes

• Engagement in required ensemble performances
