The learner spotlights feature students from Open Learning & Career Development who bring a wealth of dedication and diverse perspectives to their studies, and our programs benefit greatly as they work to advance their careers.
"Positive culture does not exist outside us; it begins in our heart."
Inclusive communication and the realization of control
Despite a long career focused on inclusive communication and active listening, Mamiko realized while organizational change takes time, she wanted to focus on what she could control, her daily interactions.
"I was convinced that learning to implement positivity to improve our high-quality day-to-day interactions and to lead groups by setting a positive example were what I wanted to do, and that the courses would equip me with the necessary skills to nurture a supportive environment for clients and colleagues.”
The goal was simple but profound: to ensure every client interaction makes them feel valued and hopeful.
Building psychological safety through emotional intelligence
The certificate uses a scaffolding approach that prioritizes self-awareness before moving to others and the organization. For Mamiko, this provided the time to reflect and build confidence to communicate more empathetically.
“As I gained a deeper understanding of myself, which in turn enhanced my connections with others. Being grounded in my self-awareness allows me to radiate positivity, which I am eager to share.”
By focusing on her own “presence” first, she found the confidence to move from a participant in the culture to an architect of one.
“This curriculum equipped me with the skills to connect with others and the confidence to initiate conversations and ask meaningful questions that foster deeper connections. It has helped me understand how to tap into my inner strength to build and maintain meaningful relationships with those around me.”
Applying a growth mindset and the power of “yet”
A major turning point in the certificate was the discovery of neuroplasticity and Carol Dweck’s growth mindset framework. The introduction of one simple word – yet – changed Mamiko’s entire psychological toolkit.
“The simple yet profound concept serves as a power linguistic tool, allowing us to reframe current setbacks as temporary obstacles. I began to enjoy reframing negative situations into ones infused with joy and hope.”
This tool proved essential not just professionally, but personally. After completing the final course, she returned home to support her mother through a worsening battle with dementia. She used these techniques of positive reframing to communicate and find small joys during a challenging health journey, viewing difficulties as opportunities for learning rather than failures.
Practical well-being strategies
Beyond the mindset shifts, the certificate provided practical, research-backed tactics that yielded immediate results:
· Gratitude journaling: “I have been writing down three things each night before bed. This delightful practice has not only enhanced my sleep but also helped me truly appreciate the little joys in life!”
· The power of “yet” & positive reframing: “These techniques have enabled me to find ways to communicate with [my mother] and share small joys. They have also helped me maintain my inner peace by encouraging me to see difficulties as opportunities for learning, rather than as failures.”
A brighter future through lifelong learning
Even with a three-hour time difference between Alberta and Nova Scotia, the online format provided a dynamic learning environment. For Mamiko, the real value lay in the community—learning from fantastic instructors and Shakira Weatherdon, as well as brilliant classmates from across the country.
“You can never fully experience the most dynamic and valuable lessons on your own.”
A mission for the future
Today, Mamiko continues her work with a renewed sense of purpose, aligned with the mission: “Take Care of Banff: our people, our community, our park.” She believes that by embracing curiosity and asking thoughtful questions, she can create a lasting impact at work and in her private life.
Her advice for those sitting on the fence? Don’t wait.
“Today is the perfect day to invest in your growth. Embrace lifelong learning, nurture meaningful relationships, and pursue joy at every step of your journey.”
We want to extend a big congratulations to Mamiko on this achievement! Completing the is a testament to her incredible dedication to continuous learning and personal growth.
